Autumn Sensory Play – Pumpkin Scented Rice

Pumpkin scented rice is perfect for Autumn themed sensory bins and tuff spots. Its super easy to make too.

Gather the Materials

To create great pumpkin scented rice you will require white rice, children’s paint or food colouring, cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, all spice and food bags.

Making the Rice

Before colouring the rice you need to make your pumpkin spice. Add 3 tablespoons of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons of ground ginger, 1 1/2 teaspoons of allspice together in a small bowl. Then put this to one side to come back to.

Now separate your rice into food bags, how many will depend on how many different colours of rice you want to use. Next add your paint or food colouring to the bags of rice along with some of the pumpkin spice.

Finally mix all of the ingredients together well in the bag and leave to dry. Drying time will depend on how much paint you have added. I usually prepare the rice the night before i want to do the activity.

Time to Explore

Once the rice is dry it can then be used to explore. Why not introduce other resources to make an Autumn themed scene. Pine cones, chestnuts, cinnamon sticks, star anise and conkers are all great additions. I can guarantee your little ones will have lots of fun exploring the pumpkin scented sensory rice. For extra fun you can add bowls, spoons, ladles and cups.
